The difference between gynaecology and obstetrics can be very confusing. To make things easier we’ve broken it down by defining the two terms to help you understand better.

What is Gynaecology?

This is a branch of physiology and medicine that deals with the functions and diseases specific to women and girls. Especially those affecting the reproductive system and the breasts. A gynaecologist performs a variety of tests, and exams focused on women’s health. They are responsible for performing the standard yearly exam, on women to ensure their reproductive health. During this exam, the doctor will physically examine the woman, perform a pap smear, perform STD tests, complete a breast exam, and monitor the woman’s use of birth control.

What is Obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the field of study concentrated on pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynaecology under the discipline known as a surgical field. Furthermore, an obstetrician can be defined as a doctor who specializes in pregnancy, childbirth and a woman’s reproductive system. They take care of you throughout your pregnancy.

What is the difference between gynaecology and obstetrics?

While gynaecology and obstetrics is considered one specialty, it comprises two distinct fields.

  • Gynaecology (the GYN) involves care of all women’s health issues.
  • Obstetrics (the OB) involves care during pre-conception, pregnancy, childbirth and immediately after delivery.
